Adjective-is used to modify, or describe, a noun or pronoun. An adjective usually answers one of these questions: Which one? What kind of? How many?
~ Their were thirteen candles on toms cake.
Adverb-is a word used to modify a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. It usually answers one of these questions: When? Where? How? Under what conditions? To what degree?
~ Steve went to Cleveland to visit his grandparents.
Conjunction- joins words, phrases, or clauses, and they indicate the relation between the
elements joined.
~We will either go to the football game or go to the mall.
Interjection- are words used to express surprise or emotion
~ Jen said wow! as she looked out the window and saw the ground covered in snow.
Noun-is a name of a person, place, thing or an idea.
~ I went to the mall in Cleveland.
Preposition-is a word placed before a noun or pronoun to form a phrase modifying another word in the sentence.
~I walked onto the sidewalk with my soccer shoes.
Pronoun-is a word used in place of a noun.
~ When the brakes squeak, they need to be fixed.
Verb- usually expresses an action.
~ I went running through the park.
1)Would you like to go to dinner, a movie or both? (using the coordinating conjunction “or”)
2)Students who have a lot of homework tend to procrastinate. (using a restrictive clause)
3)I have finished 2 papers this week and 1 test. (using a helping verb)
4)Winning is always the best part of a game; what is disappointing losing. (using a semicolon with a conjunctive adverb)
5)The basketball that left the players hands went into the hoop. (contains two or more words functioning together as an adjective before a noun)
6)This weekend I will be doing homework, working out, going to work and hanging out with my friends. (using commas in a series)
7)As I was walking out the door, the phone rang. (using a comma with an introductory phrase)
8)That’s when I realized who was behind me: my grandpa. (properly uses a colon)
